Springtime in Amsterdam is a unique performance art piece recorded in 2021-2022 as a motion picture. The book is by Christof Loy, who dreams up a complex story built on 18 pieces of popular music from operettas, musical theater, and national song books. Naxos calls this “joyful”, and there is much humor here. But the overwhelming moral weight of the project is our concern for the fate of the abused woman Theresa. Her pain is excruciating, and this is underscored by Loy’s ironic use of relatively lightweight music. Seven opera singers created roles in this production. Loy rewards six of them by naming each of their characters in the book after the singers who created the roles: Annette Dasch is Annette; Thomas Oliemans is Thomas; Theresa Kronthaler is Theresa; Norman Reinhardt is Norman; Henk Poort is Henk; Sunnyi Melles is Sunnyi. The small role of Matthias is played by Barry Atsma. Loy requires all his singers to be ready to sing, speak, dance, and act at movie-star levels. It also seems that half the artists in Amsterdam got into this somehow, and there are exhaustive credits for all of them in the keepcase booklet. Marko Letonja directed the Chorus of the Dutch National Opera, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Metropole Orchestra, and the Dutch String Collective. The motion picture was directed by Loy. Stef Kwinten was director of photography. Sung in Dutch, English, and German. Released 2023, disc has 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio sound. Grade: A+ with the ‽ and 💓 designations. . .

Romeo and Juliet - Beyond Words. Music by Prokofiev and choreography by Kenneth MacMillan in motion picture format. The action was directed by Michael Nunn and the film was directed by William Trevitt in 2019. Nunn and Trevitt are ballet dancers and choreographers who started their careers with the Royal Opera Ballet and have worked on many projects together. The film was shot on stages built in Hungary originally for a made-for-TV drama set in Renaissance Italy. Stars William Bracewell (Romeo), Francesca Hayward (Juliet), Matthew Ball (Tybalt), Marcelino Sambé (Mercutio), James Hay (Benvolio), Kirsten McNally (Lady Capulet), Christopher Saunders (Lord Capulet), Romany Pajdak (Nurse), Tomas Mock (Paris), Bennet Gartside (Friar Laurence), Tierney Heap, Laura Morera, and Beatriz Stix-Brunell (Harlots), as well as many other dancers of the Royal Ballet. The full Romeo and Juliet ballet runs about 158 minutes; this film version runs 91 minutes. Koen Kessels conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House (Concert Master Vasko Vassilev) in a special arrangement of the Prokofiev music that matches the action in the finished film. Costume design by Nicholas Georgiadis. Executive Producers were Kevin O’Hare, Judit Sós, and Jan Younghusband. The Producer was Kwesi Dickson. Released 2020, disc has 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio sound. Grade: B with the ‽ designation.
Since 2008, the Royal Opera/Ballet and its subsidiary, Opus Arte, have been leaders in packaging opera and ballet works in top-quality Blu-ray titles. Here it appears the Royal Ballet and the BBC are trying to create a new motion picture genre: a 90 minute cut-down version of a classic ballet work with naturalistic movie-quality values . . .
Read MoreWritten on Water
Written on Water is a motion picture docudrama. Choreography and direction by Pontus Lidberg. Original recorded music by Stefan Levin and pianist Magnus Svensson playing classical music solo. Stars Lidberg , Aurélie Dupont, Alexander Jones, Stina Ekblad, Sarawanee Tanatanit, and Leslie Caron. Directed for TV by Martin Nisser; edited by Lars Gustafson. Produced by François Duplat, Amaury Lafarge, Pontus Lidberg, and Mary Ellen Obias. Video is in letterbox with 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio sound. Grade: B+ with the ‽ designation.
This is an esoteric, puzzling, scrambled-plot movie about the lives of dance artists. One critic asserts that Lidberg’s erraticism results in a “dance movie adrift.” Lidberg defends his wild gyrations saying that “subjective perceptions become reality.” That’s too esoteric. I don’t need a throughplot. I enjoy the movie as a collage of scenes that show what kinds of things that can happen anytime a dancer goes to work. Of course, not everything that could happen will occur in a single gig—except in this wild movie.

There's a lot of information on this single disc. The movie lasts 242 minutes and there are several mildly interesting extra features. The default language setting is an English soundtrack in 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio surround. There is a French soundtrack in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. In addition, there are German, Castilian, and Spanish sound tracks in Dolby Digital stereo. So take your pick of sound tracks and then you can also have subtitles in English, French, German, Castilian, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, or Finnish! Finally, you can watch the whole show with a running commentary from Branagh and expert Russell Jackson, a feature that is popular with motion pictures but unusual for fine-art HDVDs.
While neither the packaging nor the disc has a statement made about region restrictions, the American release seems region-free and should play just fine on any player. But Warner Bros. has released separate German, French, and Spanish language versions for those markets and maybe other versions we don't know about. These other versions might not be region-free. So buyer beware. Grade: A+
